Why this house went with Shadow Brown
The homeowner picked Shadow Brown from the IKO Dynasty line. The swatch above is the manufacturer’s image of that blend. On a real roof it will read a little different depending on pitch, which way each slope faces and how much sun it gets. Shadow Brown has been one of the more popular picks lately: it went on 22 of the roofs in this recent-projects set. That’s why we bring full-size samples out and hold them up against the house in daylight.
Materials installed, layer by layer
With IKO Dynasty, the detail that matters most is the ArmourZone nailing strip: a wider, reinforced band where the nails go, so fasteners land where they hold best. The shingle is only the top layer. Here’s the full system that went on this house:
- A full layer of synthetic underlayment. It’s the backup water barrier under the shingles, and it holds up to foot traffic and wind far better than paper felt.
- Self-sealing ice and water membrane where water concentrates. It seals around every nail driven through it, which matters in valleys and at the eaves.
- IKO Starter at the eaves and rakes. It’s a purpose-made starter strip with factory adhesive, not cut-up field shingles, so the edges stay sealed.
- IKO Hip & Ridge on the hips and peak. Matching cap shingles made for the job, not field shingles cut into pieces.
- Lomanco Omni Roll ridge vent. It runs along the peak and lets hot, damp attic air escape. That protects the decking and keeps shingles from baking from below.
