How emergency tarping works

An emergency tarp is a temporary weather seal that keeps rain out of your home until the roof can be properly repaired or replaced. Here’s what happens when you call.

Step 1

You call or send the form

A real person answers 1-800-564-6232 around the clock and takes the address and what happened.

Step 2

A crew is dispatched

The nearest local office sends a tarp crew. If a tree is on the roof, we coordinate with tree removal first.

Step 3

The roof is sealed

Heavy-duty tarps are fastened over the damaged area and past the ridge so wind-driven rain can’t get under them.

Step 4

Damage is documented

We photograph the damage for your insurance claim and schedule a free written inspection to plan the repair.

While you wait for the crew

Your safety comes first. The roof can wait a few hours; you can’t replace your family.

Do

  • Move people and belongings away from leaks
  • Catch drips with buckets and towels
  • Turn off power to rooms with water near lights or outlets
  • Photograph the damage inside and out
  • Call your insurance company to open a claim

Don’t

  • Climb onto a wet or damaged roof
  • Go near downed power lines — report them to your utility or 911
  • Cut a tree that is resting on the house
  • Sign anything with a door-knocking storm crew
  • Throw away damaged materials before they’re photographed

Emergency tarping questions

Do you tarp roofs at night and on weekends?

Yes. John Beal Roofing answers 1-800-564-6232 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including nights, weekends and holidays, and dispatches emergency tarp crews from our local offices.

What should I do before the tarp crew arrives?

Move people and belongings away from leaks, catch dripping water, stay off the roof, keep clear of any downed power lines, and photograph the damage inside and out for your insurance claim.

Will my insurance pay for emergency tarping?

Most homeowners policies expect you to take reasonable steps to prevent further damage after a storm, and emergency tarping is usually part of a covered claim, subject to your policy and deductible. Keep the tarping invoice and photos.

Can you tarp a roof with a tree on it?

The tree has to come off first so the roof can be covered safely. We coordinate with tree crews and tarp the opening as soon as the limb is clear.

What happens after the roof is tarped?

We document the damage with photos, then schedule a free written inspection so you know whether the roof needs a repair or a replacement and have what you need for your insurance claim.
