Southern Illinois wind
People in Carbondale still talk about the May 8, 2009 derecho, when hurricane-force straight-line winds swept across Southern Illinois and dropped trees on homes all over Jackson and Williamson counties. Storms like that are rare, but strong wind and falling timber are a normal part of spring and summer here.
The Shawnee Hills are heavily wooded, and many homes around Carbondale, Murphysboro and Makanda sit right under oaks. When a limb comes through, the goal is to get the opening covered before the next band of rain.
Communities we cover
Carbondale, Murphysboro, Marion, Herrin, Carterville, Makanda, Anna, Du Quoin, Harrisburg and the rest of Southern Illinois.
