Giving Back To The Community

Published · John Beal Roofing

For a local roofing company, giving back is mostly practical: answering the phone during storms when out-of-town crews have not arrived yet, creating skilled-trade careers that require no prior experience, standing behind warranties years later, and staying in the same community rather than following hail from state to state.

Serving the Midwest,

“Giving back to the community” is a phrase that has been worn down to nothing by contractors who use it as a marketing line. So rather than claim the phrase, here is what we actually think it means for a roofing company that lives where it works.

Being here is the first part

Every hailstorm in the Midwest is followed within days by out-of-state crews. They arrive, they knock doors, they take deposits, and they leave. When a workmanship problem surfaces two winters later, the number on the contract is disconnected.

The single most valuable thing a local contractor does for its community is exist permanently. The warranty is only as real as the company behind it. We are still at the same phone number, and we will be the ones who come back out. This is a third-generation family business, family-owned since 1947 — the name on the trucks belongs to a family that lives in the markets it serves, and families do not relocate after a hailstorm.

Storm response is community service

When a bad system moves through, the first twenty-four hours matter more than anything that happens afterward. Water inside a house does damage on a clock — drywall, insulation, flooring, framing, and eventually mold.

That is why we answer at any hour. During a major storm event, that means tarping, containing, documenting and triaging as fast as our crews can move, for people who in many cases are not our customers yet and may never be. Helping a family stop water at 3 a.m. is not a marketing activity. It is the job.

Careers are the real investment

The most durable thing any local business gives a community is not a donation. It is a paycheck that supports a household.

Roofing is one of the few fields left where someone with no degree, no experience and no connections can start immediately and build a genuine career. You need to show up, work hard, and not be afraid of heights. From there, people move into crew leadership, production management, sales and estimating.

We are hiring across all of our markets, and prior experience is not required. If that sounds like you or someone you know, our careers page lists what is open.

Doing right by the homeowner is the everyday version

The unglamorous form of community responsibility is what happens on ordinary jobs, on ordinary days:

  • Telling a homeowner their roof does not need replacing when it does not.
  • Collecting the deductible instead of proposing the illegal shortcut — see why waiving deductibles is against the law.
  • Documenting a claim accurately rather than inflating it, because inflated claims raise premiums for every policyholder in the state.
  • Cleaning up the site properly, including the nails in the grass.
  • Showing up for the warranty call years later, when there is no money in it.

None of that photographs well. All of it is what a neighborhood actually gets from having a contractor that is genuinely local.

Working with local suppliers and crews

Money spent with regional suppliers, local distributors and local workers stays in the regional economy rather than leaving with a truck. A large roofing job moves a meaningful amount of money, and where that money lands matters to the towns we work in.

If your organization needs a hand

We would rather support the places our own people and customers are part of than pick causes out of a hat. If you are with a school, church, youth program or neighborhood organization in one of our markets, reach out and tell us what you are working on. Call 1-800-564-6232 and ask for the office.

Frequently asked questions

Does John Beal Roofing support local organizations?

We prioritize schools, churches, youth programs and neighborhood organizations in the markets we serve. Organizations can reach the office at 1-800-564-6232 to tell us what they are working on.

Why does it matter whether a roofing company is local?

Because a warranty is only as good as the company behind it. Out-of-state storm crews arrive after hail and leave, so when a workmanship issue surfaces years later there is nobody to call.

Do I need experience to get a roofing job?

No. Roofing is one of the few fields where someone with no prior experience can start right away and build a career. The requirements are showing up, working hard and not being afraid of heights.

Does John Beal Roofing help during major storms even for non-customers?

Yes. During a major storm event our crews tarp, contain and triage as fast as they can move, including for people who are not customers and may never be.

What markets does John Beal Roofing hire in?

We hire across all of our markets, including the St. Louis and Kansas City metros, Indianapolis, Springfield, Columbia and Jefferson City, the Lake of the Ozarks and Southern Illinois.
