The color on this roof: Frostone Grey
The homeowner picked Frostone Grey from the IKO Dynasty line. The swatch above is the manufacturer’s image of that blend. On a real roof it will read a little different depending on pitch, which way each slope faces and how much sun it gets. Frostone Grey has been one of the more popular picks lately: it went on 61 of the roofs in this recent-projects set. That’s why we bring full-size samples out and hold them up against the house in daylight.
The roofing system on this house
Dynasty is IKO's performance architectural shingle. Its signature is ArmourZone, a reinforced fabric strip across the nailing area that gives every nail a wide, tough landing spot. The shingle is only the top layer. Here’s the full system that went on this house:
- Synthetic underlayment over the whole deck. It’s stronger and more tear-resistant than felt, and it lies flat if weather rolls in during the tear-off.
- Ice and water membrane at the eaves and in the valleys. This self-adhering layer goes where water backs up: behind ice dams at the eaves and where two slopes meet.
- IKO Starter at the eaves and rakes. It’s a purpose-made starter strip with factory adhesive, not cut-up field shingles, so the edges stay sealed.
- IKO Hip & Ridge on the hips and peak. Matching cap shingles made for the job, not field shingles cut into pieces.
- Lomanco Omni Roll ridge vent. Continuous exhaust at the peak. Together with the soffit intake, it moves heat and moisture out of the attic.
