Materials installed, layer by layer

Duration is Owens Corning's best-known architectural shingle. The engineered, woven SureNail strip across the nailing line is what sets it apart: it gives nails a defined target and grip. People shop for the shingle, but what’s underneath it and how the edges are finished decide how long the roof lasts. On this job:

  • Synthetic underlayment, edge to edge. It doesn’t wrinkle or tear like felt, and it keeps the deck dry if a shower pops up mid-job.
  • Ice and water membrane at the eaves and in the valleys. This self-adhering layer goes where water backs up: behind ice dams at the eaves and where two slopes meet.
  • Factory starter at the eaves and rakes. It’s a purpose-made starter strip with factory adhesive, not cut-up field shingles, so the edges stay sealed.
  • Owens Corning Hip & Ridge on the hips and peak. Matching cap shingles made for the job, not field shingles cut into pieces.
  • Lomanco Omni Roll ridge vent. It runs along the peak and lets hot, damp attic air escape. That protects the decking and keeps shingles from baking from below.

Questions homeowners ask about this project

What shingle was installed on this Gladstone roof?

Owens Corning OC Duration, over synthetic underlayment across the full deck. The full system is in the project details table above.

Was ice and water shield installed?

Yes. Ice and water membrane went in the valleys and along the eaves, the spots where water backs up or collects first.

How big was the roof on Northeast 72nd Street?

23.33 squares, or about 2,333 square feet of roof surface. A roofing square is 100 square feet. Roofs are measured and priced that way, not by the square footage of the floor plan.

How long did this project take from start to finish?

21 days from the day the job was opened to the day the crew finished. Most of that time is scheduling, material ordering and any insurance paperwork. The tear-off and install usually take a day or two on a house this size.

Who do I call about a roof in Gladstone?
