Our crew finished a very large 605.33-square project, about 60,533 square feet of roof and several times the size of an average house on Monrovia in Lenexa, KS on Thursday, May 21. The roofing system on this house
Duration is Owens Corning's best-known architectural shingle. The engineered, woven SureNail strip across the nailing line is what sets it apart: it gives nails a defined target and grip. The shingle is only the top layer. Here’s the full system that went on this house:
- A full layer of synthetic underlayment. It’s the backup water barrier under the shingles, and it holds up to foot traffic and wind far better than paper felt.
- Ice and water shield in the valleys and along the eaves. Those are the two places a Midwest roof takes on water first, from ice dams in January and heavy runoff in spring storms.
- OC Starter at the eaves and rakes. It’s a purpose-made starter strip with factory adhesive, not cut-up field shingles, so the edges stay sealed.
- OC ProEdge Hip & Ridge on the hips and peak. Matching cap shingles made for the job, not field shingles cut into pieces.
- Lomanco Omni Roll ridge vent. It runs along the peak and lets hot, damp attic air escape. That protects the decking and keeps shingles from baking from below.
