The color on this roof: Onyx Black
The homeowner picked Onyx Black from the OC Duration line. The swatch above is the manufacturer’s image of that blend. On a real roof it will read a little different depending on pitch, which way each slope faces and how much sun it gets. That’s why we bring full-size samples out and hold them up against the house in daylight.
What went on this roof
Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration uses SureNail Technology, a woven strip across the nailing zone that gives the fasteners something to grab and helps the shingle stay down in high wind. Every one of our replacements is a system, not just shingles. On this roof, from the deck up:
- Two layers of synthetic underlayment. That’s double our standard spec. The second layer adds another barrier under the shingles.
- Ice and water shield in the valleys and along the eaves. Those are the two places a Midwest roof takes on water first, from ice dams in January and heavy runoff in spring storms.
- IKO Starter strip along every edge. The first course is where wind gets under a roof. A factory starter with its own sealant line locks it down.
- Owens Corning Hip & Ridge cap. Pre-formed cap that seals the hips and ridge.
- Lomanco Omni Roll ridge vent. It runs along the peak and lets hot, damp attic air escape. That protects the decking and keeps shingles from baking from below.
