The roofing system on this house
Duration Storm is the impact-resistant version of Owens Corning's Duration shingle, rated UL 2218 Class 4 for hail. It looks like a standard architectural shingle from the street; the difference is a reinforced backing built to take a hailstone. Every one of our replacements is a system, not just shingles. On this roof, from the deck up:
- A full layer of synthetic underlayment (JBI Synthetic - 10 Sq Rolls). It’s the backup water barrier under the shingles, and it holds up to foot traffic and wind far better than paper felt.
- Ice and water membrane in the valleys and along the eaves (Ice & Water 1 Sq Roll). Those are the two places a Midwest roof takes on water first, from ice dams in January and heavy runoff in spring storms.
- Starter along every edge (Starter). The first course is where wind gets under a roof; a starter strip with its own sealant line locks it down.
- Owens Corning Hip and Ridge. Pre-formed cap that seals the hips and ridge.
- Lomanco Omni Roll ridge vent. It runs along the peak and lets hot, damp attic air escape, protecting the decking and keeping shingles from baking from below.
