Gutters get treated like an accessory. They are not. A roof sheds water to its edge and then hands the problem to the gutters, and if the gutters cannot take it, the water does not politely go away — it goes into the fascia, the soffit, the wall and the foundation.
What do gutters actually do for the roof?
Three things, in order of importance:
- Take water off the roof edge before it can run back underneath the drip edge and into the decking.
- Move it to a controlled discharge point away from the foundation.
- Protect the trim below — fascia, soffit, siding and windows — from constant sheeting water.
The roof edge is the hardest-working part of any roof. It is where every gallon that lands on the slope eventually arrives.
What happens when gutters fail?
- Fascia rot. A gutter is fastened to the fascia board. Overflowing or leaking gutters keep that board wet, it softens, and eventually it will not hold the fasteners — which is how a full gutter run ends up on the ground. See our guide to fascia and how it is installed.
- Soffit damage and attic intrusion. Water working behind the gutter gets into the soffit, which is also where your attic intake ventilation lives.
- Foundation problems. This is the expensive one. Repeated saturation of the soil against a foundation causes settling, cracking and basement water. A roof puts a remarkable volume of water on the ground in one storm, and it all lands in the same narrow band if the downspouts are not carrying it away.
- Ice dams. A blocked gutter holds standing water at the eave. It freezes, and it becomes the seed of the ice ridge that forces meltwater back under your shingles. More in our ice dam guide.
- Siding staining and landscape erosion. Cosmetic, but it is usually the first thing a homeowner notices.
What does each season do to your gutters?
- Spring. Heavy sustained rain is a volume test. Undersized or poorly pitched gutters overflow at the corners and at the low points.
- Summer. Storm debris, seed pods and shingle granules build up. Heat also expands and contracts long aluminum runs, working the fasteners loose.
- Fall. The obvious one. Leaves pack into downspout openings, and a plugged downspout makes the whole run useless.
- Winter. Ice weight. A frozen gutter can hold hundreds of pounds, which is what tears sections off marginal fascia.
What are the signs your gutters are failing?
- Water sheeting over the front edge during a rain — the clearest sign of a clog or bad pitch.
- Visible sagging between hangers.
- Separated seams or gaps at the corners and end caps.
- Staining or streaking on the siding below the gutter line.
- Peeling paint or soft wood on the fascia.
- Erosion trenches or pooling in the beds below the eaves.
- Basement moisture that tracks with heavy rain.
- Plants growing in the gutter, which means it has held soil long enough to grow something.
Does gutter size and pitch matter?
Substantially more than most homeowners expect.
- Size. Five-inch gutter is standard, but a large roof area, a steep pitch or long runs can overwhelm it. Six-inch gutter carries roughly forty percent more water and pairs with larger downspouts.
- Downspout count. Often the real bottleneck. A long run with one downspout will overflow at the far end no matter how clean it is.
- Pitch. Gutters need a slight fall toward the outlet. Dead-level gutters hold standing water, breed mosquitoes and corrode from the inside.
- Hanger spacing. Too few hangers is why gutters sag, and ice punishes that quickly in our climate.
- Seamless vs sectional. Seamless gutter is formed on site in one continuous run, which eliminates the joints that are the most common leak point.
Are gutter guards worth it?
An honest answer: sometimes. Good guards on a house surrounded by mature trees genuinely reduce cleanings. Cheap guards can make things worse by trapping debris on top where you cannot reach it, and no guard eliminates maintenance entirely. If someone promises you will never clean a gutter again, adjust your expectations accordingly.
Should gutters be replaced with the roof?
Usually, and for practical reasons. The drip edge, gutter apron and starter course all interact with the gutter, and installing new gutter against those details at the same time produces a tighter edge than retrofitting later. The gutters also get handled during a tear-off — old aluminum that was already marginal often does not survive the job.
If your gutters are more than fifteen years old and you are replacing the roof, replacing them together is generally the better value. If they are newer and sound, we will say so.

Twice a year is the general rule in the Midwest: once in late spring after seed drop, once in late fall after the leaves finish. Houses under mature trees often need more.
Can clogged gutters really cause roof damage?
