Ice dams are not really a roofing problem. They are an attic problem that shows up on the roof, and that distinction is the reason so many homeowners pay to fix the same leak three winters in a row.

How does an ice dam form?

It takes three things, and every Midwest house has at least two of them:

  1. Snow on the roof.
  2. Heat escaping from the living space into the attic, warming the underside of the roof deck.
  3. An eave that stays cold, because it hangs past the exterior wall with no heated space beneath it.

The heat melts snow on the upper slope. That meltwater runs down the roof until it crosses the eave line, where there is no heat underneath, and it refreezes. Repeat that cycle over a few days and you build a ridge of solid ice along the gutter line.

Once that ridge exists, the next round of meltwater has nowhere to go. It pools behind the dam and sits there. Shingles shed water running downhill — they are not a waterproof membrane and were never designed to hold standing water. The pooled water works its way under the shingle courses, through the nail holes, and onto the decking.

Why are Missouri and Illinois so bad for this?

Counterintuitively, we get worse ice dams than places that are much colder. A region that sits at ten degrees all winter keeps snow frozen on the roof. Our winters hover right around freezing — a 38-degree afternoon followed by a 24-degree night, over and over.

That is the freeze-thaw cycle, and it is the engine behind ice dams. Every cycle melts a little, refreezes a little, and drives water further under the shingles. It is also what destroys mortar, masonry chimneys and concrete in this region for exactly the same reason: water gets into a small space, expands about nine percent as it freezes, and levers the space open a little wider each time.

What are the signs of an ice dam?

  • Thick icicles along the gutter line. A few small icicles are normal. A heavy row hanging off the eave means water is pooling and freezing where it should be draining.
  • A visible ridge of ice at the roof edge, often with a wet band of shingle above it.
  • Water stains on interior ceilings or at the top of exterior walls, typically appearing during a thaw rather than during the snowfall.
  • Damp or stained insulation in the attic near the eaves.
  • Peeling paint or damp drywall where the ceiling meets an outside wall.
  • Snow melting off your roof much faster than your neighbors’ — a direct sign you are heating your attic.

What should you never do to remove an ice dam?

This list matters, because the removal attempt usually costs more than the dam would have.

  • Never chip at it with a hammer, axe or shovel. You will destroy the shingles underneath, and shingles are brittle in the cold. We replace a lot of roofs every spring that were damaged by ice removal, not by ice.
  • Never use rock salt or calcium chloride loose on the roof. It corrodes gutters, flashing and fasteners, kills the landscaping below, and stains masonry.
  • Never pour hot water on it. It refreezes within the hour, usually somewhere worse, and adds volume to the dam.
  • Never get on an icy roof. No exceptions worth making.

What should you do right now if you have one?

  1. Manage the water inside first. Contain the drip, move what can be damaged, and if a ceiling is bulging with trapped water, a small relief hole in a bucket-controlled spot beats a collapsed ceiling.
  2. Clear snow from the lower roof if you can reach it safely from the ground with a roof rake — pull downward, never sideways, and stay off ladders in ice.
  3. Cool the attic, do not heat the roof. Close attic bypasses you can reach, and make sure bathroom and kitchen fans are not dumping warm moist air into the attic.
  4. Call for professional steam removal if the dam is already established. Low-pressure steam is the only method that removes ice without damaging shingles.

How do you stop ice dams permanently?

The permanent fix keeps the roof deck cold, which means the problem is solved in the attic:

  • Air sealing. The biggest wins are the gaps you cannot see — around recessed lights, bath fans, the attic hatch, plumbing stacks and top plates. This matters more than insulation depth.
  • Insulation to depth. Most older Midwest homes are well short of current recommendations, and the shortfall is usually worst right at the eaves where it matters most for dams.
  • Balanced ventilation. Intake at the soffits and exhaust at the ridge, in proportion. Ridge vents with blocked soffits do very little, and blocked soffits are extremely common after insulation is added without baffles.
  • Ice and water shield at the eaves. A self-adhering membrane along the roof edge seals around fasteners and protects the deck when water does back up. This goes on during a replacement and is standard on the roofs we install.

Heat cable is worth a specific mention: it is a symptom manager, not a fix. It can keep a channel open on a problem roof, but it runs up the electric bill every winter and does nothing about the heat loss causing the dam. We would rather fix the attic.

Will insurance cover ice dam damage?

Often yes for the resulting interior water damage, and often no for the roof repair itself if the insurer decides it stems from maintenance.
