Everyone in the Midwest knows to check the roof after a spring hailstorm. Almost nobody checks after a November one, and that is the problem.
Late-season storms are not gentler than spring storms. What is different is the timing: the damage happens right before the season that will exploit it hardest, during the months when homeowners are least likely to walk the yard and look up.
What kind of damage do November storms cause?
Late-season systems in our region tend to bring strong straight-line wind rather than the giant hail of April and May, though hail certainly happens. Wind damage is the quieter of the two:
- Broken seal strips. Wind lifts the shingle, breaks the adhesive bond, and the shingle lays back down looking completely normal. It is no longer sealed and no longer waterproof.
- Creased shingles with a horizontal fold line across the tab.
- Missing tabs and ridge caps, usually on the windward slope.
- Lifted flashing and drip edge at rakes and eaves.
- Debris impact from limbs that are heavier once wet.
The seal strip failure is the one to understand. It is invisible from the ground, it does not leak in a vertical rain, and it fails the first time wind drives rain sideways or an ice dam backs water up the slope.
Why does late-season damage get missed?
- Nobody is outside. Yard time ends in the Midwest around the time these storms start.
- Leaves and early snow cover the evidence on the ground and in the gutters.
- It does not leak immediately. A broken seal is a latent defect, not an active one.
- Storm awareness drops. After a November wind event, neighbors are not comparing notes about roofers the way they do in May.
- Holidays. Late November is the single easiest time of year for a household to put something off.
Why is waiting until spring a costly choice?
- Winter is exactly the stress test the damage will fail. An unsealed shingle plus an ice dam is how a ceiling gets ruined.
- The claim gets harder to prove. Insurers settle by date of loss. By March, a November wind event has competition from every storm since, and an adjuster can reasonably argue the damage came from an uncovered cause or from wear.
- Reporting deadlines run. Policies limit how long you have to report. Months of delay put that at risk.
- Repairs get harder and slower. Cold shingles are brittle, seal strips will not activate, and every roofer in the region is behind after the first spring storm.
What should you do after a late-season storm?
- Note the date of the storm while you remember it.
- Walk the perimeter and look for shingle pieces or granules in the yard, dented gutters, and displaced ridge caps.
- Check the attic for daylight or fresh staining.
- Photograph anything you find, timestamps intact.
