If the soffit is the ceiling of your roof overhang, the fascia is its face. It is a single board running the length of the eave, and almost everything at the roof edge depends on it being sound.

What does fascia do?
- Caps the rafter tails. Cut lumber ends absorb water fast. The fascia closes that end grain off.
- Carries the gutter. Every hanger screw lands in it, holding the weight of the gutter plus water, plus ice in January.
- Backs the drip edge. The metal drip edge at the eave laps over the fascia so water is directed into the gutter instead of behind it.
- Supports the soffit. The soffit panel typically runs from the wall into a channel at the fascia.
- Sets the finish line of the roof, visually.
What is fascia made of?
- Dimensional lumber — typically 1x6, 1x8 or 1x10 pine, cedar or fir. Standard on older homes. Paintable, repairable, and vulnerable to rot if the paint film fails or a gutter leaks.
- Wood capped with aluminum coil. Very common in our region: sound wood stays, and bent aluminum trim coil wraps its face. Low maintenance and no repainting.
- Fiber cement. Rot-proof, dimensionally stable, holds paint well, heavier to work with.
- PVC and composite. Fully rot-proof and maintenance-free, more expensive, and it expands and contracts more than wood so fastening detail matters.
- Aluminum or steel fascia systems on commercial and some modern residential work.
How is fascia installed?
In order, and the order matters:
- Tear off and inspect. Old fascia comes off and the rafter or truss tails underneath are inspected. Rotted tails get sistered or cut back and repaired before anything new goes on. Installing new fascia over bad tails is a guaranteed callback.
- Verify the line. The tails are checked for a straight line and trimmed where needed. A wavy fascia line is almost always wavy tails, not a wavy board.
- Cut and fit the boards. Runs are measured with joints planned to fall on a tail, never spanning open air. Corners are mitered.
- Fasten into the tails, not just into the sheathing — typically two fasteners per tail, set below the surface.
- Prime and seal cut ends on wood. Every cut end is a water entry point, and this step gets skipped constantly.
- Install the soffit, which runs into the fascia channel or a nailed receiver strip.
- Install drip edge at the eave, lapping over the fascia so water is thrown clear.
- Cap with aluminum if capping, bending the coil to wrap the face and bottom edge cleanly.
- Hang the gutter with hangers into the tails where possible, pitched toward the outlets.
Capping versus replacing: which is right?
Aluminum capping over existing wood is legitimate and popular — when the wood underneath is sound. The failure mode is capping over wood that is already soft. The aluminum looks perfect from the ground while the board behind it continues to rot, invisible, until a gutter full of ice pulls the whole assembly off the house.
Any contractor who offers to cap without first probing the existing board is selling appearance. Ask what they found.
What are the common installation mistakes?
- Fastening into sheathing instead of the tails. No holding power for a loaded gutter.
- Skipping the drip edge or installing it under the fascia instead of over it, which sends water behind the board — the exact thing the detail exists to prevent.
- Unsealed cut ends and unpainted back faces on wood fascia.
- Butt joints in open space between tails, which sag and open.
- Capping over rot.
- Blocking soffit ventilation while trimming, which quietly creates the attic problems covered in our soffit article.
- No expansion allowance on PVC runs, which buckle in summer heat.
Repair or replace?
Isolated rot at one corner or one bay can usually be cut out and replaced in a section. Widespread soft wood along a whole elevation should be replaced as a run — piecemeal patching of a failing board costs more over two visits than doing it once.
And as with soffits, the cheapest time to do fascia work is during a roof replacement or a gutter replacement, when access and setup are already paid for.
