At a glance: John Beal Roofing replaced the roof on Compton Hill Place in St. Louis, MO 63104, finishing October 30, 2026. 9.00 squares of Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration, a compact roof, installed over synthetic underlayment across the full deck. Handled by our St. Louis office (314-429-6000).
The 63104 ZIP covers some of south St. Louis city's oldest neighborhoods around Compton Hill Reservoir Park, where roofs are often small but tightly framed against neighboring walls. At 9 squares this is one of the smallest roofs we finished all month, and proof that a small roof gets the same assembly as a big one. A compact city roof has proportionally more edge, so the starter course and eave protection carry a bigger share of the load.

The roofing system on this house
TruDefinition Duration is Owens Corning's flagship architectural shingle. Its SureNail strip, a woven band across the nailing line, is what lets it hold on in the kind of straight-line winds the Midwest gets every spring. Every one of our replacements is a system, not just shingles. On this roof, from the deck up:
- A full layer of synthetic underlayment (JBI Synthetic - 10 Sq Rolls). It’s the backup water barrier under the shingles, and it holds up to foot traffic and wind far better than paper felt.
- Ice and water membrane in the valleys and along the eaves (Ice & Water 1 Sq Roll). Those are the two places a Midwest roof takes on water first, from ice dams in January and heavy runoff in spring storms.
- Starter along every edge (Starter). The first course is where wind gets under a roof; a starter strip with its own sealant line locks it down.
- Owens Corning Hip and Ridge. Pre-formed cap that seals the hips and ridge.
- Lomanco Omni Roll ridge vent. It runs along the peak and lets hot, damp attic air escape, protecting the decking and keeping shingles from baking from below.
