At a glance: John Beal Roofing replaced the roof on Kingsbury Boulevard in University City, MO 63130, finishing October 30, 2026. 31.00 squares of GAF Timberline HDZ, a larger-than-average roof, installed over synthetic underlayment across the full deck. Handled by our St. Louis office (314-429-6000).
University City sits just west of the St. Louis city line along the Delmar Loop, and its older brick homes tend to carry steep pitches, dormers and more valleys than a newer subdivision house. This is our second project on Kingsbury Boulevard this year, and a bigger one: 31 squares of GAF Timberline HDZ. On a roof with this many intersections, the valleys and wall flashing do more work than the open field, so that is where the crew spent its time.

The roofing system on this house
Timberline HDZ is GAF's best-selling architectural shingle: a thick, dimensional laminate with GAF's widened LayerLock nailing zone, which gives the installer a far bigger target for every nail. Every one of our replacements is a system, not just shingles. On this roof, from the deck up:
- A full layer of synthetic underlayment (JBI Synthetic). It’s the backup water barrier under the shingles, and it holds up to foot traffic and wind far better than paper felt.
- Ice and water membrane in the valleys and along the eaves (Alco Ice & Water). Those are the two places a Midwest roof takes on water first, from ice dams in January and heavy runoff in spring storms.
- Starter along every edge (OC Starter 100 ft.). The first course is where wind gets under a roof; a starter strip with its own sealant line locks it down.
- GAF Hip and Ridge. Pre-formed cap that seals the hips and ridge.
- Lomanco Omni Roll ridge vent. It runs along the peak and lets hot, damp attic air escape, protecting the decking and keeping shingles from baking from below.
