The color on this roof: Peppercorn
Peppercorn is part of the OC Duration color lineup. Keep in mind a swatch is a starting point. On the roof, the color shifts with the angle of the sun, the pitch and what’s around it. Peppercorn has been one of the more popular picks lately: it went on 6 of the roofs in this recent-projects set. If you like it, ask us to bring a full-size piece out and hold it up against your own house.
What went on this roof
Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration uses SureNail Technology, a woven strip across the nailing zone that gives the fasteners something to grab and helps the shingle stay down in high wind. The shingle is only the top layer. Here’s the full system that went on this house:
- Synthetic underlayment, edge to edge. It doesn’t wrinkle or tear like felt, and it keeps the deck dry if a shower pops up mid-job.
- Ice and water shield in the valleys and along the eaves. Those are the two places a Midwest roof takes on water first, from ice dams in January and heavy runoff in spring storms.
- OC Starter at the eaves and rakes. It’s a purpose-made starter strip with factory adhesive, not cut-up field shingles, so the edges stay sealed.
- OC ProEdge Hip & Ridge on the hips and peak. Matching cap shingles made for the job, not field shingles cut into pieces.
- Lomanco Omni Roll ridge vent. Continuous exhaust at the peak. Together with the soffit intake, it moves heat and moisture out of the attic.
