Board & Batten Vinyl Siding

Vertical siding for farmhouse, Craftsman and modern homes. Swatches, real homes and straight answers from John Beal Roofing.

Board and batten began as a practical fix: wide vertical boards nailed side by side, with a narrow strip (the batten) covering each seam so rain could not get in. Barns and early farmhouses across the Midwest were built this way. Today the strong vertical lines are one of the most requested looks in exterior remodeling, from the modern farmhouse to Craftsman bungalows and contemporary builds.

Where Board and Batten Works Best

Most homeowners use it as an accent over horizontal lap siding: gables, entryways, porch walls, dormers and bump-outs. The change in direction breaks up a large wall and gives the house a custom feel. Sided top to bottom, it delivers the crisp all-vertical modern farmhouse look, especially in White, Nightfall or Sea Slate.

Choosing a Color

Matching the board and batten to the lap siding gives a subtle change in texture. Contrasting it (white gables over Nightfall lap, or Sea Slate vertical over White lap) makes the accent the focal point. Note that nine of the deepest Signature colors are not offered in Cedar Peaks board and batten; in those colors we use CedarMAX instead.

Board & Batten Vinyl Siding Questions

Is vinyl board and batten as strong as lap siding?

Yes. ProVia’s CedarMAX 8″ board and batten carries a 179 mph wind rating (ASD), higher than its lap profiles, and Cedar Peaks board and batten is rated for 144 mph.

Can board and batten be used on the whole house?

Yes. All-vertical siding is the signature of the modern farmhouse look. Many homeowners still prefer it as an accent on gables and entries.

Does insulated board and batten cost more?

CedarMAX insulated board and batten costs more than Cedar Peaks because of the foam backer, but it adds insulation, impact resistance and a heavier look.

What colors does the 12″ board and batten come in?

The CedarMAX 12″ profile is made in White only.
