Shingle color on this project

The color on this job was selected at the property with the homeowner and is not carried in the public record for it. If you want to know exactly what was installed in this neighborhood, call the Metro East & Southern Illinois office at 618-549-0800 and we will look it up.

What we actually installed — and why it matters

The shingle is the part homeowners shop for. It is not the part that decides whether a roof reaches year twenty-five. That is decided by the layers underneath it and how the roof terminates at its edges — and on this project every one of them was new:

  • Synthetic underlayment across the whole deck. Stronger and far more tear-resistant than felt, and it will not wrinkle if the tear-off runs into weather.
  • Ice and water membrane at the eaves and in the valleys. A self-adhering barrier in the two places water genuinely backs up: behind an ice dam at the eave, and where two slopes dump into each other.
  • A manufacturer starter course at eaves and rakes. Not cut-up field shingles. A purpose-made starter with a factory adhesive strip is what holds your edges down in an 80 mph straight-line wind.
  • Matching hip and ridge cap. Thicker pre-formed cap that seals the peak and finishes the roof so it does not read as a repair.
  • Continuous ridge ventilation. Paired with soffit intake it moves heat and moisture out of the attic. Skip it and you cook the shingles from below and void most manufacturer warranties.
  • New flashing, not reused flashing. Valleys, sidewalls, chimneys and pipe boots got new metal and new boots.

Who did the work

This roof was installed by John Beal Roofing crews out of our Metro East & Southern Illinois office. Family-owned since 1947, we run our own crews instead of brokering the job to a subcontractor you never meet, and every roof carries our lifetime workmanship warranty alongside the manufacturer’s material coverage. If a storm opens it up at 2 a.m., someone answers — see 24/7 emergency service.
